So
here's the skinny on some basics about hostelling & what to
expect during your stay with us. Many similar hostel customs are
observed internationally, and many are unique to each place:
Typically,
hostels provide separate sleeping quarters for men and women,
along with a kitchen & common areas where folks can socialize,
relax, play music, or learn more about the local area. Many
hostels, such as us, have co-ed dorms and private rooms as well.
We
have a fully equipped kitchen- you just supply the groceries.
There is a grocery store 2 blocks away & natural food stores
within walking distance. We are in one of the most visited
areas of Portland- the Hawthorne District. There are plenty of
shops, cafes, restaurants, several cinemas, etc., all within the
neighborhood.
Hostelling
International is a member based organization- we are here to promote
intercultural exchange. Memberships may be purchased upon arrival
and are good for one year at any H.I. hostel the world over (there
are 4400 or so of them!). The cost is $28 for an adult,
$18 for those over 55, and youths under 18 get one free. Those
who do not have nor wish to buy a full membership may get a temporary
one for $3 per night.
Sheets,
blankets and pillows with cases are all provided at no additional
charge- sorry but we prefer that you not use sleeping bags nor
personal linens/pillows here. Towels may be rented for $1 if you
don't have one of your own.
We
have 34 beds within our 4 dorms & 2 private rooms. There
are 2 co-ed dorms, plus men's only & women's only dorms.
We have one couple's room with a double bed & private porch,
plus a family room with a double bed and two twin beds. You
can see pictures of them in our Photo
Gallery.

Check-in
time is 12 noon through 10pm. There are no curfews or lockout
periods once you are checked in. Sorry, but we do not offer late
check-ins.
You
can arrive anytime after 8am but the beds will not be ready until
12 noon. Check-out time is at 11am, but feel free to let
us know if you would like to leave your bags for the day.
Reservations
are strongly recommended year round. Being
a traveler's hostel, people from Portland and the surrounding
area are not able to stay here. Groups are welcome and encouraged
to stay here. See our Rates
& Reservations page for more details.
Getting
here by public transportation is easy! See our Directions
page for the details.
We
have a washer and dryer on site as well as internet access- a
high speed kiosk & a free wireless system for notebooks.
Office
hours are from 8am to 10pm Pacific Time, 7 days a week, 365 days
a year. At night you may use a security code to come and go as
you please- there is 24 hour access once you are checked in.
We have ample & free 24-hour parking in front of the hostel
on Hawthorne Boulevard. Plenty of bike storage, too!
Sorry
but no pets are allowed on site, though we do have a house cat-
Bailey, and he's friendly & likes to be petted! For those
concerned about allergies- Bailey is short-haried, hangs out in
the common areas, but is not allowed in the sleeping rooms.
We
have a ton of useful info here to help you decide how to best
experience Portland and the surrounding natural splendor. Check

page for tour ideas & Portland in general.
